Navigating Mid-Career: Preparing for the Challenges Ahead

Navigating Mid-Career: Preparing for the Challenges Ahead Mid-career can indeed be a dangerous place – a point where you might become too expensive for the roles you can perform and unwilling to take the roles you can get. This tricky situation often arises because aging is mandatory, but upskilling is optional. As we grow older and attain 'senior' status in our careers, promotions and salary hikes may come by default – at least for a while. As long as your skills and capabilities continue to rise at a comparable pace, there's no problem. However, if your ability to deliver value starts lagging behind your salary, it should set off alarm bells. What if your company eliminates your role or asks you to justify your position or salary? So, what's the way out? Here are some strategies to prepare yourself and overcome the mid-career crisis: The Freelancer Test : Every year, ask yourself, "If I were a freelancer, could I earn as much as my current salary (or more)?"...

Mid-career can be a dangerous place -- you might become too expensive for the roles you can perform, and unwilling to take the roles you can get. This happens because ageing is mandatory, but upskilling is optional. As we become older ('senior'), in many organisations, promotions and salary hikes come by default -- at least for a while. And as long as your skills and capabilities also keep going up at a comparable pace, there is no problem. But if your ability to deliver value starts lagging your salary, it should set alarm bells ringing. Because, God forbid, what if your company eliminates your role or asks you to justify your role or salary? So what's the way out? Here is a test I propose: Every year, ask yourself -- "If I were a freelancer, could I earn as much as my current salary (or more)?" If you pass this 'freelancer test', you are fine. Make investing in yourself your number one priority -- not just technical skills but also people skills, persona...

Rediscovering Our Sense of Ownership: A Call to Action for the Cement Industry

Every place is a workplace in some form or the other

Image
Despite being the plant head, I have to face a lot of resistance when I request everyone to gather together every morning at exactly 8:00 am for group prayer and then safety talk.  And senior people also do not miss the opportunity to taunt that what is the use of such safety talk.  Today, after some heart-wrenching accidents, entire newspapers are filled with such news and there is so much sorrow and anger among the people, will we still ask the same question?  Look at the first rule.  Unless you understand this rule, the rest of the rules will be of no use.  And yes, workplace is written here, take the meaning of that word in its broadest sense.  Every place is a workplace in some form or the other.
