Why I Decided to Enroll in a 3-Year Online Degree Program
At this point in my life, one might ask: "Why take on the challenge of pursuing an online degree, especially one that spans three years?" It's a valid question, and one I’ve thought deeply about before taking this step. Here's my reasoning, and I hope it inspires anyone who's hesitating to pursue something similar.
A Career Rich in Experiences, But Growth Never Stops
Having spent decades in the cement industry, I’ve had a fulfilling journey—working in newly set-up plants, standalone operations, and even handling challenging assignments in turbulent political environments. From troubleshooting machinery to leading entire plants as Plant Head, I’ve accumulated a wealth of experience that I’m truly grateful for.
But here’s the thing: experience is just the foundation—learning keeps you building higher.
The cement industry is evolving rapidly, and I realized that while practical knowledge has been my strength, adding formal learning to my portfolio can only enhance my capabilities. In today’s fast-paced world, continuous learning isn’t just an option; it’s a necessity.
Why an Online Degree?
Flexibility to Balance Work and Study
My professional life has always been dynamic, often requiring long hours and immediate decision-making. An online degree allows me to balance this demanding schedule with learning. Whether I’m working on a project in a remote location or engaging with my team, I can keep learning without compromising either.Structured Learning to Complement Experience
Over the years, I’ve taught and trained others on concepts like TPM, TQM, and 5S. But formal learning gives a new perspective. It sharpens concepts, introduces fresh ideas, and opens up avenues for applying proven theories in innovative ways.Future-Proofing My Skills
The industry is becoming more tech-driven and globalized. An online degree helps me stay ahead of the curve, equipping me with tools and knowledge to handle these changes seamlessly.
It’s Never Too Late to Learn
I’ve always believed in leading by example. I encourage my teams to learn, grow, and evolve constantly—why should I hold myself to a different standard? Learning keeps you relevant, humble, and forward-thinking.
A Step Toward Bigger Goals
This degree isn’t just about a qualification; it’s about expanding my horizons. It’s about showing that growth has no age limit and no defined path. It’s about setting an example for my peers, my team, and perhaps even my children.
Final Thoughts
Taking this step is a reminder that there’s always room to grow, regardless of how much you’ve achieved. To anyone considering going back to learning—whether through a degree, a course, or self-study—I say: do it. It’s never too late to invest in yourself.
And as for me? I’m excited about the journey ahead. Here’s to balancing work, study, and life—and coming out stronger on the other side.
